Back to the Future from May 6th?

Ironically following on from my last post on an example of an organisation managing talent well so that new blood could come through to drive the organisation forward, it seems as though the Lib Dems and Tories have decided to go for the go in the opposite direction by suggesting removing the default retirement age.

Needless to say this is a hugely sensitive area- some argue that this requires a more robust approach so frank discussions about individual cases can take place. Yet in light of the problems surrounding youth unemployment in the current economic climate is extending the DRA the correct move forward?

It is arguably more a reaction to the huge deficit we are having to pay back in light of the borrowing that has lead us to the financial dead end we find ourselves in. Coupled with this is the growing fear around the skills gap between the UK and the rest of the world as identified by the Leitch Report in 2006. Either way it would seem that both age groups will run in to problems- one from a lack of exposure to the working world, the other having to enjoy the ‘good life’ when they expected to.

However there is something to be said for the knowledge management opportunities that might lay ahead with having workforce group available for a longer period in employment. Perhaps it is an opportunity to draw on their tacit and explicit knowledge for the challenges that lay ahead?

So using the more experienced workers to steer the new generations through uncertain times ahead? Great Scott Marty! We might have found a benefit in this problem!
